Awareness Session on Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and De-Addiction
Mukand Lal National College, Yamunanagar, organised an awareness session on Sound Mental Health, Suicide Prevention, De-Addiction, and Tobacco and Its Harmful Effects on October 10 to mark World Mental Health Day. The programme was organised by the National Task Force on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention in collaboration with the Red Cross Club, Red Ribbon Club, Anti-Drug and Tobacco Awareness Club, and NDLI. Its theme was “Mann Jagrati.”
The session focused on promoting mental health awareness, encouraging students to seek timely support, and educating them about the harmful effects of drug addiction and tobacco use. It also highlighted emotional well-being, early intervention, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
The programme featured two speakers. Dr. Naveen Sharma, Medical Officer, Mental Health and De-Addiction, addressed students on mental health and substance dependence. He stressed the importance of recognising signs of emotional distress, maintaining mental well-being, and seeking professional help when required. He also discussed the consequences of substance abuse and urged students to make informed and responsible choices.
Dr. Bulbul, Deputy Civil Surgeon and Nodal Officer, DMHP Programme, spoke about tobacco and its harmful effects. She outlined the serious health risks linked to tobacco consumption and emphasised prevention, awareness, and the adoption of a tobacco-free lifestyle.
Both speakers called on students to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, communicate their concerns openly, and support people facing emotional difficulties. They said awareness and collective responsibility were essential to building a healthier, drug-free society.
Principal Dr. Manohar Goyal welcomed the initiative and highlighted the importance of such programmes in guiding students towards responsible choices and holistic well-being. He encouraged them to remain informed, seek help when necessary, and contribute to a supportive campus environment.
The programme was convened by Dr. Sumita Kanwar, Dr. Savita Garg, Dr. Poonam, and Dr. Anju Nagpal, whose efforts contributed to its successful organisation.
The session concluded with a message of awareness, compassion, and responsibility, urging participants to priorities mental health, avoid addictive substances, and adopt healthier lifestyles.
